Training Your Labrador Retriever

Early training is essential and necessary to manage the character of the Labrador Retriever early on in the first stages of their development. Puppy and basic obedience classes are recommended to teach manners, an American Kennel Club Canine Good Citizen test can be achieved as well. It is important that each member in the household follow the disciplines and teachings learned in training in order to not confuse your lab puppy.

Discipline should be gentle, but firm, however, there is no need to strike; simply removing the lab pup from the area or placing them in a secured area or crate when you cannot be with them and showing them something else that is good to play with, works much better than yelling, smacking with a newspaper, or other negative actions.

Remember, this is just a puppy that is learning and you are the teacher. Your Labrador Retriever wants to please you. Rewards works much better than negative reinforcement. You don't want your puppy to fear you. Labradors want to please you and only want your affections and love.
